Engineered quartz is roughly ninety per cent ground natural quartz bound with pigment and resin. It is non-porous, never needs sealing, will not etch, and looks the same on the slab as it does on the sample. For a busy household that wants a white kitchen and does not want to think about the countertop again, it is usually the right answer.
We are not tied to a single manufacturer, which means we can recommend on merit rather than on what we happen to stock. We regularly fabricate the major engineered surfaces and can source any colourway to order.
These get confused constantly, and they are not remotely the same material. Quartz is manufactured: ground stone plus resin, made in a factory, uniform and predictable. Quartzite is a natural stone quarried from the ground, harder than granite, with one-of-a-kind veining and real porosity that requires sealing.
If you want zero maintenance and total predictability, quartz. If you want a stone that is genuinely unique, tolerates a hot pan, and can live outdoors, quartzite. We stock both and will show you them side by side, which settles the question in about thirty seconds.
Quartz takes a crisp edge profile beautifully and is particularly well suited to mitred waterfall islands, because the manufactured consistency means the pattern matches around the corner without the vein-matching gymnastics natural stone demands. Every edge profile we cut is available in quartz, and all cutting, edge work and polishing happens in our own Bridgeport shop.
Visit the yard by appointment to see full slabs rather than three-inch samples. Quartz patterns repeat on a large scale, and a sample chip tells you almost nothing about how a veined slab will read across a nine-foot island.
