Soapstone is talc-rich metamorphic stone, soft to the touch and completely non-porous. It has been used in American kitchens and laboratory benches for well over a century, which tells you most of what you need to know about how it holds up. It arrives a soft grey and darkens toward charcoal as it is used.

Because soapstone is non-porous, nothing soaks in. Red wine, olive oil, lemon juice, turmeric: none of them do anything permanent. It never needs sealing, and it is completely unbothered by acid, which makes it the opposite of marble in the one respect that causes most kitchen regret.
It is also exceptionally heat resistant. A cast iron pan straight from the burner can sit directly on it. Soapstone was used for wood stove surrounds precisely because it absorbs and radiates heat without damage.
This region has genuinely old housing stock — Colonials, farmhouses, converted barns, carriage houses. In a 1780s kitchen a soapstone counter and an integral soapstone sink look correct in a way that engineered quartz never manages, because the material was actually being used in kitchens like that when they were built.
We fabricate primarily Alberene soapstone from Schuyler, Virginia, which is quarried domestically and has a shorter supply chain than imported stone. Brazilian and Finnish soapstones are also available and tend to be slightly harder.
Left alone, soapstone darkens slowly and unevenly as oils from cooking and hands work into the surface. Treated with mineral oil, it darkens immediately and evenly to a deep charcoal that shows the veining dramatically. Neither is more correct. Oiling simply accelerates and evens out something that will happen regardless, and you can stop at any point and let it go its own way.
