About this stone

Calacatta Viola is quarried in the Apuan Alps of Tuscany. The ground is warm ivory, crossed by veining in deep burgundy, plum and charcoal that runs in wide bands instead of fine feathering. It is one of the most photographed marbles in interiors right now.

It is also one of the least forgiving stones to fabricate. The veining is bold and directional, so the layout decides how the finished piece looks. We plan every Viola cut against a photo of the actual slab, put the strongest movement where it is seen first, and mirror it across bookmatched seams.

See it in our Calacatta Viola powder room in Monroe, where a mitered apron carries the veining around the corner.

Care and maintenance

Viola is a calcite marble, so it etches with acid just as Calacatta and Carrara do. On its warm ground, etch marks read a little softer than on a cool white marble, but they still show on a polished finish.

Choose honed anywhere near food or drink. Seal at installation and about once a year. Powder rooms and feature walls suit it well because they keep acid away from the stone.

How we fabricate it

Every top is templated, laid out and cut in our Bridgeport shop and installed by our own crew. We photograph your slab, place the template over the photo, and you approve where the veins and seams fall before anything is cut. Installation is usually one to two weeks after templating.
